Curriculum Topic Study

Supporting STEM education leaders in deeply examining core ideas, practices, and crosscutting concepts is critical to supporting a new vision of science teaching and learning. The Curriculum Topic Study (CTS) process and tools link state standards, core content, research on learning, and best practices using a unique, systematic study process. This process includes 6 areas of systematic study and reflection: building content understanding; identifying concepts, core ideas, and practices; considering implications for curriculum, instruction, and formative assessment; examining research on commonly held ideas; exploring K-12 articulation and connections; and state assessment expectations. This 6-session virtual professional learning opportunity, designed for Texas science leaders, will introduce you to the new, updated CTS tools and processes that can be used in a variety of contexts to inform curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Science leaders will have opportunities to learn, practice, apply, and collaborate in a virtual community. TSELA Advocacy Position Statement Related to the Science TEKS Review

This position statement was formally adopted by the TSELA Board after a member vote on July 9, 2020.

Related to the Science TEKS Review and Revision, TSELA asks that the State Board of Education (SBOE), TEA staff and members of the TEKS Review Committee consider the following:

    • TSELA recommends that standards are created by accessing research-based resources including “A Framework for K-12 Science Education.” Carefully considering integration of content, cross-cutting concepts, and science and engineering practices. Note: This may also be referred to as simply the Science Framework.
    • TSELA recommends that significant attention is given to intentional vertical and horizontal alignment within the revised TEKS.
    • TSELA recommends that adequate time is provided both for the workgroups and in the process for soliciting feedback in order to allow appropriate educator and expert engagement with the process.
